25 September 2017 - We're Back!

written by Mark Crosby

It's never easy to find good band members and after a few hurdles, surprises and traumas I'm glad to say we're back in full force with a new line up.

Now, we have Tim Cutcliffe (bass), Sam Morse (guitar), John Loveridge (guitar), Rob Hodgson (drums) and Mark Crosby (vocals).

We will be playing at a few gigs with a few surprises, too.  We have been working on new material and have been writing a new album for some weeks; the main thing is it sounds good.  It has passion, strong melody with an edge and in some places maybe even an indie feel.

Now that we have two guitarists Nightblade has a more full and versatile sound.  I have to say I'm excited, this music has a real energy; above all it is creative and fresh, born by the collaboration of band members of various backgrounds and tastes - however, we are in harmony with our musical direction.  Watch this space, I have a feeling in my water this will be good.

First up is the video to "Your Soul Right Of Way" which can be seen below.

The band will once again be opening for Snakecharmer at their September 12 gig at Kidderminster Town Hall and have a support slot for a gig at Diamond Head's November 14 show at The River Rooms in Stourbridge.

29 July 2014 - New Music Coming Soon

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

Nightblade will soon be heading back to The Old Smithy recording studio to lay down tracks for a new EP entitled "Crisis Has No Prejudice".

Singer Marc Crosby feels that the title track, along with "Poison Woman" and "To No Avail" are some of the band's best work yet.

We don't have a release date set just yet, but keep checking back here for more information as it becomes available.

14 October 2013 - More Media Reaction to Closer to the Threshold

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

There has been more positive reaction to 'Closer To The Threshold' from a variety of Heavy Metal sites who have reviewed the album.

Metal Rules said:

There haven’t been that many acts that make me want to go see them live after hearing their studio efforts, but I’d definitely chalk these guys up, a quality record made by guys who love what they do, look out for them at a big stage near you, classic British metal is in safe hands.

Metal Forces Magazine enthused:

"Heavy metal is back!! Okay, so we knew that anyway, not that it really went away, but Nightblade, with their distinctly 80s sounding moniker, are the sort of band we want in the trenches alongside us as we march across the misty moors in search of heavy metal Utopia.

Nightblade are in-your-face metal, no messing around; it’s a punch to the mid-section, a jab in the eye and fangs heading straight for the jugular sort of opus. This is album number two by the British rockers, following on from 2012’s Servant To Your Lair. The quartet hail from rainy Birmingham, in England’s West Midlands – that grey haze of a place that once reared such metal legends as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. And it’s the latter that this bunch of veteran rockers seem to take most inspiration from".

While AltSounds said:

Closer To The Threshold is full-throttled, raw and powerful Brummie metal, just the way it should be done. It's solid, full of riffs, passion and pace.

19 August 2013 - Dave Interviewed By Black Phoenix Rising

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

Dave was recently interviewd by the Black Poenix Rising website.  You can read the original here, but if the colour scheme's a bit hard on your eyes it's reproduced in full below.

Here's another of our Exclusive BPR interviews for your reading pleasure :) This time i caught up with Dave Parrish, Guitarist of Birmingham's own Heavy Metallers NIGHTBLADE for a chat about the bands new album, their plans for the rest of 2013 and much more ... enjoy /rock

Hails Dave, welcome to the next of our BPR band interviews. Thanks for taking to the 'hot seat' to answer our questions and for your support of the forum, much appreciated !!!

SeventhSon (BPR) :
For any of our members who are not familiar with Nightblade could you introduce yourselves ?
Dave Parrish (Nightblade) :
Hi yes ..Mark Crosby ..vocals ..Billy Fitz ..bass ..Rich Lawley ..drums and Dave Paz guitar.
SeventhSon :
How would you best describe the bands sound ?
Dave :
We try to get the NWOBHM sound from the 80s but try and get an up to date quality ...both live and in the studio. so die hards and new Metalheads would appreciate us.
SeventhSon :
When were the band formed and how did you decide on the name Nightblade ?
Dave :
The band was formed in 2010. I (Dave) had finished a project and was looking to start something up,my brother had contact with Bill and we got together and put an ad in rich bitch studios for a vocalist where Mark answered the call. Three drummers later we finally got the last piece of the jigsaw in Rich Lawley. As for the name ? Well, every name we came up with we googled and there was usually a band already with that name. I wanted us to be called "Kevin the pigeon" but Bill came up with the name Nightblade, and we all seemed to like it.
SeventhSon :
Which bands would you say are Nightblade's biggest influences ?
Dave :
Well we all love Maiden, Metallica Black Sabbath and the NWOBHM from the early 80's like Jameson Raid etc. Mark likes Alter Bridge, etc so we are influenced by all of these bands in some form.
SeventhSon :
The band released their second album 'Closer To The Threshold' earlier this year, how has the album been received by fans and the music media ?
Dave :
Yes, its came over very positive as a big improvement from our debut album "Servant To Your Lair" and reviews have been great. We are glad of good and bad criticism for us to keep improving. We have also jumped into bed with "Skyfire PR" who have signed us up to work on our behalf to promote the album world wide ie in the media and air play etc and gigs.
SeventhSon :
Did you find the whole recording process easier or harder than it was for the 'Servant To Your Lair' album ?
Dave :
Easier, as we knew the pit falls on the first album. We feel the new tracks were stronger and our engineer "woody" also improved our sound as we took longer on production, thou we always work hard on rehearsals so everyone knows there part. Which makes the most of studio time
SeventhSon :
How would you think the albums compare and have you got a favourite out of the two ?
Dave :
The first album was NWOBHM and there are some great songs that we always play live. The second album, we feel, is more creative and we also have Rich Lawley (new drummer) on this album and he drives us on. So i'd say for now the second album is the one I play more on my car stereo but we have plans for an even better album number 3 !!
SeventhSon :
Which of the bands songs do you most enjoy playing live ?
Dave :
I personally like playing the title track "Closer To The Threshold", a real chugger, and from the debut album we all like to play "Jekyll and Hyde" and "Suspended Reality ", we always open the set with those two tracks.
SeventhSon :
What would you say is the best part of been in a band and what is the worst ?
Dave :
Writing tracks and then seeing and hearing them on an album is pretty cool and in 2012 we did a 7 date UK tour staying in hotels traveling in a clapped out van living the dream!! We have all been in bands back in the day where someone has got an ego or gets arsey, but we are now old enough and ugly enough to surpass all of that and we can tell it like it is without too many strops.
SeventhSon :
What are Nightblade's plans for the rest of 2013 in terms of gigging, writing new material etc ?
Dave :
We are currently writing and rehearsing new material for the studio in December and have a few gig commitments left before spending as much of 2014 on a gigging frenzy !!
SeventhSon :
Now a few questions just for fun .... Have you got an 'all time' favourite Metal/Rock album ?
Dave :
Tough one !! The first 5 Black Sabbath albums , the "Black" album from Metallica, some of Maiden's albums , "Burn" from Deep Purple ... so no not really , too many great albums to choose from !!
SeventhSon :
Which is the best Metal gig you've ever been to ?
Dave :
Another tough one !! I'm old enough to have seen Black Sabbath, Kiss, ACDC, Van Halen and Thin Lizzy at the Birmingham Town Hall and the Odeon Birmingham. When Van Halen came over to support Black Sabbath in the late 70's, nobody had seen anything like it so that gig sticks in my mind along with Kiss at the Birmingham Odeon and meeting Phil Lynott back stage at the Birmingham Town Hall.
SeventhSon :
If the band were to do a cover version which song would you choose and why ?
Dave :
We always mess about with "Rock Bottom" from UFO or Judas Priest's "Living After Midnight", two classics, so if we had to one of them tracks would possibly come out. But saying that we usually like to leave covers to the tribute bands !!
SeventhSon :
If Nightblade could play at any of the top Metal Festivals which one would you choose and why ?
Dave :
We would like to do Wacken or any festival in Europe really as we feel the NWOBHM is more popular over there or Brofest in Newcastle where all the NWOBHM legends come together.
SeventhSon :
Finally, have you got a few words for the members of BPR ?
Dave :
Just a big horns up /rock Keep supporting original Metal music and get out there and support the venues to keep bands playing, and to keep flying the flag. And a big thanks for reading and supporting web sites that promote all Metal/Rock.
SeventhSon :
Thanks again for answering our questions Dave and i wish you and the rest of Nightblade all the best for the rest of 2013 and i'm certainly looking forward to hearing what you come up with for album number three !! All the Best and Keep It Metal /rock

1 July 2013 - Media Reaction To "Closer To The Threshold" (1)

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

Feedback for the new album is coming in and is decidedly positive:

"OOooff ... just been listening to THIS little beauty.  If you're a fan of good ol' fashioned HEAVY METAL, particularly early Metallica & DEFINITELY Megadeth, then this is one album YOU want on your favourite music player… NIGHTBLADE - CLOSER TO THE THRESHOLD is a modern classic, which floods the aural sense with tight musicianship & relives the glory days of the 80's HEAVY METAL scene worldwide.  Oh.  Hell.  YESSSS!!! \m/  It made 'Big' Jim grin like a fackin' Cheshire cat; that takes some doing in this day & age… \m/"

So says "Big" Jim Hussell from

16 May 2013 - Coming Soon - New Album

written by Mark Crosby

We are delighted to announce the forthcoming release of our second album "Closer To The Threshold" which features our recent single "Over My Dead Body".

We are very happy with the sound that we have achieved on the ten track that make up the album as follows:

  1. Over My Dead Body
  2. Closer To The Threshold
  3. Devil's Advocate
  4. You'll Always Remain
  5. It's All About You
  6. Out Of Commission
  7. Your Soul Right Of Way
  8. Shadow Of Doubt
  9. Tongue Tied And Broken
  10. On Blackened Days

This is an album that we  are very pleased with; we feel that we are developing our own sound and the tracks on this album have more 'twists & turns' and a little more creativity than on the previous album.

The whole album is less obviously NWOBHM but is still "Rock From Its Roots With a Difference".

9 January 2013 - Big News - Welcome Richard

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

We'd like to give a big welcome to the Nightblade family to Richard Lawley who joins the band as drummer in place of Rick Jones who has moved on.  Rick's family and work commitments meant that he couldn't devote as much time as he would have liked to the band and he leaves us with our best wishes.

Richard hails from Kinver and has been drumming since he was 14 years-old. He has been in a number of bands in the past, the most notable of which were Thai Dyed Suicide.  He lists Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, along with Zeppelin drummer John Bonham amongst his influences and we look forward to seeing how he brings that inspiration to the Nightblade sound.

The boys went back to The Old Smity recording studio to record some new material which should be available as an EP later in the year.

Four new songs - 'Over My Dead Body', 'Out Of Commission', 'Your Soul Right Of Way', 'Always Remain' - show the band on top form with styles ranging from their expected high-velocity rock to an epic which will lend itself to audience participation when it's unveiled live.

Keep an eye on the website for more teasers in the coming weeks; we don't want to give too much away just yet while we're concentrating on the current release 'Servant To Your Lair' which we will have some exciting news about very soon.

20 May 2012 - Taking A Break

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

We had a great time at the Academy in Birmingham, we even managed to lurk backstage and hear a little of the Sabbath set.  We're taking a break from gigging for a few weeks so that we can work on some new material and get into the studio to record it.  In the meantime here's one of Steve Parrish's videos from the Emma Scott gig:

9 May 2012 - Emma Scott Gig Venue Change

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

In one of those good news - bad news situations our Emma Scott gig at Birmingham's O2 Academy has been upgraded from Academy 3 to Academy 2 (that's the good news!) meaning there's loads of extra tickets available (more good news!).  The bad news (sort of) is that Black Sabbath are playing in the main room next door at the same time meaning we can't go and see them.  For Sabbath fans the bad news is that that gig will probably sell out in minutes, but the good news for them is that they'll be more than welcome to come see us instead - remember, we've got loads of extra space now.  And that's not all!  There's a Buy-One-Get-One-Free offer on tickets so you can bring a friend, details here.

27 April 2012 - Tour Recap

written by Mark Crosby

Now that the dust has settled and ears have stopped ringing I was evaluating the "Servant To Your Lair" tour and thought I would put pen to paper.

Bubbling with enthusiasm and armed with a turbo-charged (!) minibus we set off for the infamous biker venue 'The Patriot' in Crumlin, Wales, with a stop for a radio interview on Mountain FM in Ebbw Vale. We played to a packed and buzzing crowd, second on the bill knocking out ¾ of the "Servant To Your Lair" album in true Nightblade no messing, watertight, fashion. We went down a storm and will be back at The Patriot on May 4 for the Party In The Pub Festival.

We continued our form throughout the following six dates delighting fans with our new twist on NWOBHM.

Kidderminster Town Hall was packed to the rafters as we supported Dirty DC and the new live arrangement of "Where You've Started From" blew the roof off the place.

Camden threw up our most enthusiastic fans; the teenage metalheads into Maiden and Priest, whose air guitar skills were so good I nearly stopped singing, harked back to Bill & Ted and Wayne & Garth. Bloody hilarious.

The Roadhouse provided another suitable home-turf venue, knocking out "Relentlessly" to an appreciative audience.

The highlight of our trip 'Up North' was playing at the Snooty Fox in Wakefield with the gig streamed live around the world on the internet and recorded to DVD to boot.

The final stop of the tour was back in Wales at the Rhondda Hotel in Porth, completing a run of seven gigs in nine days in which we gained ground, and fans, and proved that we mean business.

15 December 2011 - Emma Scott Gig Review

written by Andy, Nightblade HQ

Nightblade's performance at The End as part of the Emma Scott Presents gig on December 4th was review by the Midlands Music Manics website. This is what Sue Wardle had to say:

"First band up tonight were Nightblade and with a sound that is instantly comparable to some of the great new wave British metal bands such as Motorhead and Iron Maiden, it would be easy to make the mistake of only hearing the obvious and not looking for those things that make Nightblade worthy of putting their own stamp on this genre. Band details on the website confirm that these guys individually, have a history of hard playing rock 'n' roll and collectively, within the lifespan of Nightblade, have already created a significant wealth of formidable metal, which is soon to be unleashed through the impending release of their first album 'Servant To Your Lair'. If you like your metal rich and rigorous, then this is one to check out or just simply head over to the Boars Head in Kidderminster on December 26th to catch Nightblade in action."

The full review, including Sue's views on the other bands can be found at the Midlands Music Maniacs website.
